BIOGRAPHY.

Antonio Cruz Villalon was born in Seville, Spain, in 1948.

Antonio Cruz began studying architecture at the School of Architecture of Seville during the years 1964 a 1968, finishing the race and graduated at the School of Architecture of Madrid in 1971. In that year also is associated with Seville architect Antonio Ortiz Garcia, known as "Cruz and Ortiz" or more colloquially "The Monchis ó Curros", together beginning a long and fruitful career in Sevilla, remain concerning the architecture world since they started working together in the years 70 twentieth century.. Of 1968 a 1971 Architects worked with Rafael Moneo andaRicardo Aroca.

Antonio Cruz is part of a family that has given brilliant, for the time being, a president of the constitutional court and an advocate of public works.

In 1971 performed, and just finished the race in the School of Architecture of Madrid, housing house Doña María Coronel Street Seville. From that first work emblematic, Cruz and Ortiz were enriching and refining their language works as the extension of the City of Ceuta, Santa Justa Station or the La Cartuja stadium, both in Seville. Among the numerous awards they have received the National Architectural highlights of Spain 1993. Besides Spain, tens obras and Hannover, Amsterdam, Basilea y Maastricht, among other cities.

His "calm rationalism" is evident in the Santa Justa, built between 1987 and 1992 as terminal AVE high-speed trains. The Olympic Stadium in Seville came with the idea that became Sevilla host an Olympics and was realized with the organization World Athletics 1999, designed by Cruz and Ortiz with engineer José Luis Manzanares. Presents horizontally outside appearance achieved by placing the sports to a level below the natural levels, allowing the building height lower grade. Original way south facade was designed as a large open window to the old EXPO 92 in the words of its creators "allows daytime natural lighting inside, while provides an overview of the stands and the covering from the outside, transformed at night into a daunting showcase showing the show happens after glass cloth ".

His teaching experience began in 1974-1975 Projects Professor of the School of Architecture of Seville. He has been a visiting professor with teammate Antonio Ortiz at many universities as;

  • 1987-1989 Visiting Professor of Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH), Zurich.
  • 1989-1990 Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Design. Harvard University.
  • 1992 Visiting Professor in the Department of Architecture. Corell University.
  • 1992-93 Visiting Professor at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)
  • 1994-1995 Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University.
  • 1998 Visiting Professor, Graduate School of Design, Columbia University.
  • 2000-2001 Visiting Professor, School of Architecture of the University of Navarra.
  • 2002 Kenzo Tange Visiting Design Critic, Graduate School of Design, Harvard University.
  • 2004 Honorary Professor of the University of Seville.
  • 2007-12 Workshop course Professor Chair Cruz Blanca Sevilla University and Ortiz, School of Architecture of Seville.

 

Awards and competitions OBTAINED.

They are very numerous awards won, by Studio Cruz and Ortiz, here only point out the most prestigious, others can be found on their website:

  • 1974 First Prize in the Competition of Ideas for the Home of the Official Colleges of Pharmacists, Medical and Veterinary of Cordoba.
  • 1979 First Prize in the Prototyping School.
  • 1984 First Prize in the Competition of ideas for the expansion of the City of Ceuta.
  • 1988 First Prize in the Competition of Ideas for the Sports City of Madrid.
  • First Prize in the Competition of Ideas for Huelva Bus Station.
  • 1996 First Prize in the Competition of the New Center of Air Traffic Control Sevilla.
  • First Prize in the Competition of the remodeling of the station Basel, with Giraudi & Wettstein.
  • 1998 First prize in the competition for the Spain Pavilion at Expo Hannover 2000.
  • 1999 First prize in the competition for the Administration Building Polygon Almanjáyar. Grenada.
  • 2001 First prize in competition for The New Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
  • 2002 First prize in the competition for the Humanities Library at the University of Amsterdam.
  • 2005 First Prize in the Competition of Ideas for the Management of Llano Yellow, Algeciras.
  • 2006 First Prize in the Competition of Ideas for Administrative building in C / Pablo Picasso 1. Sevilla First Prize in the Competition of Ideas for the Faculty of Education in Sevilla. First Prize in the Competition of Ideas for Campus Health Sciences in Granada.
  • 2007 First Prize in the Competition of Ideas for rehabilitation and adaptation San Agustin Convent in offices and luxury hotel in Seville.
  • 2008 First prize in the contest Homes for Leidsche Rijn Utrecht.
  • 2010 First Prize in competition for the offices of the General State Agency in Cadiz.

 

OBTAINED honors.

Throughout his career have received numerous awards, both inside and outside of Andalusia, some of which are the following:

  • 1982 Sevilla City Award to new works by the work of Lumbreras Street Homes, granted by the City of Seville.
  • 1993 Spanish National Architecture Award by the Railway Station Santa Justa in Sevilla, granted by the Superior Council of Colleges of Architects of Spain and the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Environment
  • 1997 Gold Medal of Andalusia, granted by the Government of Andalusia and the Andalusian Parliament by the body of work.
  • 1998 National Sports Award 1998. National Architecture Award Sports, granted by the Superior Council of Sport for the Olympic Stadium in Seville.

 

Major Projects.

During his career are many works and projects throughout Spain and Europe, study by Cruz and Ortiz, both in housing and in other buildings, here just pick the most significant made, the rest are related to your website.

His work was extensive and included performances as;

  • Public Library Building State-Provincial Library 'Infanta Elena' of Sevilla Architecture as container culture. Sevilla Public Library, work of architects Cruz and Ortiz, reservoir is a splendid book.
  • Santa Justa Station. The firm of architects Cruz and Ortiz was commissioned to design this season, that was to house the first line in Seville high-speed rail in Spain.
  • Adaptation Provincial Historic Archive of the House of Chains in Cadiz. 1981-1986.
  • Homes for Carabanchel.1986-1989.
  • Seaport Chipiona. 1994-1995
  • Estadio Municipal de Chapin in Jerez de la Frontera and improving and expanding the same in 1999.
  • Estadio de la Cartuja (Seville)
  • Expansion of the railway station Basel SBB (Switzerland)
  • Estadio de la Comunidad de Madrid, Peineta.1989 stadium
